When Grok Bot Fails (and How to Avoid It)
Bots break. Here's where, and what to do about it.
#1
The bot gets real work done, but it also fails sometimes. These are failures users reported themselves, with a fix for each.
- It couldn't log in. @muhmuhhh1 reports: "It booked my flight but couldn't login so I just bought it." (x.com/muhmuhhh1/status/2109579755687235917) Avoid it: Sign in yourself on the bot's computer before the task, and take over for passwords, two-factor codes, and CAPTCHAs. Sessions stay saved, but some sites expire them, so ask the bot to pause and tell you instead of working around a check. (cursor.com/docs/grok-bot/work)
- Some sites block bots. In a Munich office-listing monitor, big property portals blocked the bot (Sebastian Mueller, quoted on ayautomate.com/grok-bot-examples). Avoid it: Tell the bot to report a blocked site instead of using old data, and check whether a plugin exists, since plugins are more reliable than clicking through a website. (cursor.com/docs/grok-bot/work)
- A LinkedIn account got suspended. @v4vihan reports his LinkedIn account was suspended after using the bot. (x.com/v4vihan/status/2110066068941373730) Avoid it: Let the bot research and draft, and send messages yourself. Don't automate connection requests or bulk messages.
- The bot team went unused. @suna_gaku reports building a marketing/SEO bot team that ended up unused. (x.com/suna_gaku/status/2110902332791898585) Avoid it: Start with one real task, make it reliable, save it as a skill, and only then automate it. (cursor.com/docs/grok-bot/work)
- Outages and failed runs. Some users report outages and failed runs, e.g. @twood_trust. (x.com/twood_trust/status/2110430481330450586) Avoid it: Try the least destructive fix first. Retry, reopen the conversation, restart the app, then recover the computer. Reset is a last resort. Ask routines to report failures out loud. (cursor.com/docs/grok-bot/work)
- A purchase mistake. No user has reported one in our sources. Elon Musk replied that SpaceX would make users whole if the bot made a purchase mistake or leaked a card (x.com/elonmusk/status/2110610960474079445). That's a reply on X, not a published policy. Avoid it: Keep purchases behind your approval and check the final price yourself.
- Broad triggers act on the wrong things. The docs warn that broad listeners like "every new message" create noise, use up your usage, and act on irrelevant input. (cursor.com/docs/grok-bot/work) Avoid it: Use a narrow trigger, like a specific channel plus a specific phrase.
- A test run does real work. Per the docs, a test can navigate sites, change files, and call connected tools. (cursor.com/docs/grok-bot/work) Avoid it: Test with safe inputs and keep write actions behind approval.
- Stopping doesn't undo actions. Per the docs, "Stop now" ends work, but it doesn't undo actions the bot already completed. (cursor.com/docs/grok-bot/work) Avoid it: Put approvals before anything you can't take back.
